The View Host Mock Mat Gates Pledge of Allegiance

Rep. Matt Gates this week proposed and passed a new amendment requiring the House Judiciary Committee to begin its session by chanting the Pledge of Allegiance. And given that the entire Congress is already doing it daily, the hosts of “The View” can’t help but scoff at how the whole process was an incredible “waste of time.” I did.

Gaetz’s amendment met with some opposition in the committee itself, for precisely the reasons “The View” organizers put forward on Thursday. For example, Rep. Jerry Nadler (DN.Y.) said at a committee meeting, “Why does he need to pledge allegiance twice on the same day to show how patriotic we are?” I don’t understand,” he said.

In fact, Congress has taken the Pledge of Allegiance every day since 1988. That’s what “The View” moderator Whoopi Goldberg wanted to clarify before enjoying the Gates discussion. And with that said, she made a very clear statement about a member of Congress who is still under investigation for multiple sex crimes.

“You wasted everyone’s time by suggesting that they do what they’re already doing!” she said angrily. “What is this waste of time!?”

The host also offered her thoughts on what the committee could have done with that time instead of discussing the Pledge of Allegiance.

“This is the Judiciary Commission, isn’t it? So, wouldn’t it be a better way to show patriotism by addressing issues like police violence, mass shootings, and prison reform?” Whoopi added.

Host Joy Behar suggested that Gates is using the reading of the pledge as a means of “hiding his guilt” regarding his involvement in the Jan. 6 riots and the investigation surrounding him.

“They always say, ‘Oh, let’s wave the flag, let’s rally around the flag!’ When there’s something to hide. And that’s what he does,” said Behar.
