The online debate between rivals has come as Ford seeks to ramp up production of all-electric vehicles in hopes of catching or even surpassing Tesla’s sales in this area.
Tesla remains the clear leader in the electric-vehicle sector, but Ford was the second-largest selling all-electric vehicle in the U.S. last year, selling 61,575 electric vehicles.
The Twitter Spaces event marks the latest interaction between the two management teams in their unique rivalry. Even though the two companies are in direct competition, each has expressed admiration for the other.
Musk, who heads Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter, has repeatedly praised Ford as a historic American company and its ability to avoid bankruptcy unlike its suburban rivals. general motors And Chrysler in the Great Recession.
And when Elon Musk took over the social-media company last year, other automakers paused their ad spending on Twitter, but Ford remained active on the platform. Personally, Farley frequently interacts with fans and followers on Twitter.
Farley also praised Tesla for its EV leadership under Musk, while trying to emulate many of Tesla’s successes.
Ford, in particular, beat out Tesla in the pickup segment to begin production of the F-150 Lightning, an electric version of its consistently popular truck, in April 2022. Ford also heavily benchmarked the Mustang Mach E crossover Tesla Model Y, trailing Tesla on price. Cut the electric crossover.
The timing of the Tesla-Ford summit will probably come as a surprise to many. This came a day after Twitter Spaces experienced a major technical glitch that prevented Florida Governor Ron DeSantis from announcing his presidential campaign there.
This isn’t the first time Tesla’s competitors have spoken to or asked Mr. Musk to speak. 2021, and…Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess invited Musk to an internal meeting with German automaker executives to discuss innovation.
