In the early days of David and Patrick’s relationship, the two didn’t really get along because Patrick had never dated another man before and David wasn’t good at adult romantic relationships. And in Season 4, Patrick serenades David with his acoustic version of “Simply the Best” at his big opening party at the store, and it’s a beautiful moment. According to Reed’s interview with CBC, Levy decided to go to Reed’s live music performance and put the actor’s musical skills to good use in the series.
“The script arrived shortly after that, and I think the line was ‘Patrick plays a soulful acoustic cover of ‘Simply the Best’.’ Dunn always thought the song was lyrically beautiful, but such a danceable power anthem didn’t fit the romance date. ”
Directed by “Kids in the Hall” alum Bruce McCulloch, the episode gives scenes plenty of room to breathe, and Patrick’s performance feels heartfelt and authentic. The audience reaction was also pretty real, Reed told the CBC, and Catherine O’Hara really shed a few tears. It’s a beautiful moment, but the song gets even more powerful when David turns the tables on Patrick at the store one night and lip-syncs it to him. David was always interested in expressing his love for himself and Patrick because he didn’t want to embarrass himself, but he did his best to lip-sync and tell his boyfriend how much he loved him. I showed you how much I love you. It’s such a lovely song that it’s getting a little foggy just writing about it, but it’s not the last time it’s played, nor the greatest of times.
